Breaking news, Hot topic explanation: BREXIT

Aggiornamento: 12 nov 2021

Brexit, for sure this is a term that you have recently heard a lot of times, everyone has different opinions on it but who really knows what exactly this means and how it will impact our life.

I tell you a secret, less people than you think so here you will find a basic guide to get to know this hot topic.

CURRENT STATUS: WHAT IS BREXIT? Basically it is the choice of The United Kingdom to leave the European Union which has become legally recognised on 31 January 2020. To give the other EU countries the right time to get prepared for this transition the exit was regulated by the Withdrawal Agreement which came into effect on 1 February 2020 and established the Transition Period. The Transition Period ended on 31 December 2020 and from 1 January 2021 the UK became a third party country to the EU.

If you want to know all the exact trading changes and details, there is an interesting and free webinar called “Trading with Italy” made by The Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce in collaboration with The British Chamber of Commerce for Italy on May 19th 2021. Click on the link below and you will be redirected to their official page: https://britishchamber.it/recording-available-trading-with-italy/.

Since this is supposed to be an easy lecture and i do not want to annoying you with too much numbers and statistics, i have prepared a basic step guide called THE 7 BIG CHANGES OF BREXIT. After reading this short explanation, I promise, you will have all of the information needed to sustain a conversation on Brexit and give your own opinion about it.

So, let's start:

1) NEW EUROPEAN TRAVEL RULES From January, UK nationals will only be able to travel without a visa to Schengen area countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period (this includes most EU nations and Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein).

Other requirements needed would be: A passport with at least six months left, except for trips to Ireland, and travel insurance with health cover.

TIPS Pay attention to switch off your data or your credit on your phone will finish in one second since no more free roaming will be guaranteed.

Then do you have a pet and you want to travel with him/her? No problem but make sure to take him to your vet at least 10 days before to get his/her health certificate.

2) DO NOT EXCEED IN ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO

From 2021, duty-free shopping will be available if you travel to the EU, although there will now be limits to the amount you can bring in duty-free from the EU, as there are for arrivals from non-EU countries. So you will be charged if you cannot prove that tobacco and alcohol will be bought only for personal use.

3) CASE STUDY 1: UK CITIZENS WHO WANTS TO LEAVE IN EU

UK people who want to leave and work in another Eu country, like Italy, must get a new residents’ permit.

Indeed, you will need a visa to work, study or retire in another place. The only exception permitted will be tourism.

4) CASE STUDY 2: EU CITIZENS IN THE UK

if you have "indefinite leave to remain" or "indefinite leave to enter" the UK , there's no need for you to do anything , otherwise, you'll need to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme or become a UK citizen if you have all of the requirements needed. Click on the links above if you are interested in becoming a Uk Citizens.

5) CASE STUDY 3: IMMIGRANTS

Do not worry there will be an equal treatment for EU and NON-EU Citizens and everyone that could contribute to the UK economy will be welcomed.

Now the monetary deal, to get a student visa you will need at least £348 and for a work visa the price is in between £ 610 and £1100. Unfortunately health surcharge will not be included if you will not be a healthcare worker and it will cost you at least £ 625 per person every year.

So a good thing to do is a pros and cons list!

6) TRADING LINE EU-UK AND VICEVERSA

The first good news is that there won’t be extra taxes on goods but on the other side there will be a lot of paperwork to do for sales outside England, Wales and Scotland.

Pay attention to plants, animals and foods. For those products you will need a special license or label and also check the validity of your professional qualification to avoid bad surprises. For the EU is a bad game but the Uk could still negotiate individually with other countries like US and China which could be a benefit for the UK economy in the long run.

7) BREAKING EXCEPTION: NORTHERN IRELAND

There will be an all-but-invisible border, without checkpoints, between Northern Ireland ( Outside EU) and the Republic of Ireland (which remains in the EU).

Northern Ireland will continue to follow many of the EU's rules, meaning that lorries can continue to drive across the border without having to be inspected.

However, some new checks will be needed on certain goods arriving into Northern Ireland from the rest of the UK (England, Scotland and Wales) instead.

Food products , such as meat, fish and eggs , will need to be checked to ensure they comply with EU standards.

An agreement has also been reached to eliminate tariffs for most trade between Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) and Northern Ireland but a reduced extra paperwork will nevertheless be required also to them.

Here you are, now take a paper and a pen and draw your conclusion. The result could surprise you, only two minutes, and now you could have a dialogue about Brexit without feeling unaware about the effect that this event is and will cause.
